Captive Heart

Chapter 13

The door opened, making a squeaking noise. Taylor woke up drearily and noticed Phyllis still leaning her head on his shoulder. He peered through the darkness to see a light coming from the door.
“HELLO?” Taylor called. The door opened all of the way and a figure appeared. The lights flicked on and Taylor blinked at the harsh light. Phyllis woke up and looked all around.
“What’s going on?” She whispered.
“I don’t…don’t know?” Taylor stammered, trying to focus on the figure in the doorway. The figure walked in and Taylor gasped.
There stood the stocky guard with the glasses, holding two trays piled high with food. He placed them on the floor, smiled at the two, waved and left. Taylor looked over at Phyllis and she looked at him. They crawled towards the trays and looked down.
“Do you think it’s safe to eat?” Phyllis asked.
“Right about now, I really don’t care.” Taylor said, feeling the saliva build in his mouth.
“Well, I don’t know…” Phyllis said, hesitantly picking up a piece of bread. Taylor grabbed a piece of bread and shoved it in his mouth, chewing on it while he smiled.

Ike and Zac immediately looked up towards the door.
“Ike?” Zac whispered in terror.

“Guys!” Amanda’s voice startled the two of them.
“DON’T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!” Zac said, jumping.
“Shhh! Guards!” Amanda said, putting her finger to her lips and looking out the door.
“Where’s your friend Holly?” Ike asked.
“Keeping the cowboy busy.” Amanda said, still looking out the door.
“Get ready will ya.” She said.
“Cowboy?” Zac questioned.
“Our head honcho. We need to try and get Phyllis and Taylor out of soilitary. You going to help?” Amanda asked, looking back at the two guys.
“Of course!” Zac said excitedly.
“Uhh…I don’t know if we should…” Ike said hesitantly.
“Come on Ike.” Zac said.
“We need to get them out of there.” Zac added.
“All right.” Ike said, jumping up.
“Hurry up.” Amanda said, looking out the door again. Zac grabbed his shoes and put them on, with out tying the laces and walked to the door with Ike soon behind.
“We have to meet Holly at a storage closet in an hour so we have to try to get them out in that amount of time.” Amanda said, sneaking through the corridor with the guys behind her.
“How do we get to where they’re holding them?” Zac asked.
“I’m not to sure but, we’ll just have to try and find it.” Amanda answered.

Taylor ate greedily, shoving food in his mouth while Phyllis ate sparingly. He stopped, turned and looked at her. He swallowed his mouthful and stared at her.
“What?” She asked defensively.
“Nothing.” He answered, wiping his mouth.
“Why are you staring at me?” She asked, narrowing her eyes at him.
“No reason.” Taylor answered, looking away.
“Is there something you want to talk about?” She asked.

“No.” He answered and stuffed another bit of food in his mouth.
“I wonder why that guard came in here and gave us this food?” Phyllis questioned.
“Yeah, me too.” Taylor answered.
“I really hope we get out of here soon. I’m tired of being so cramped up.” She said, looking all around.
“You should have thought about that before you got yourself thrown in here.” Taylor remarked.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean!” Phyllis said angrily.
“Nothing…Nothing.” Taylor said, backing away, putting his hands up defensively.
“No…what do you mean!” Phyllis said, crawling on all fours towards him.
“I’m just saying…”
“You’re just saying that I was being stupid and could have saved myself the time and the trouble. Is that what your saying?” Phyllis said, getting in his face.
“Well…I…I…” Taylor stammered nervously.
“Well, than…I’d have to say your right!” Phyllis said, backing off. She moved over towards the wall and looked away.
“Huh?” Taylor said, taking a deep breath.
“What could I have done about it. Nothing. Nothing at all. We’re never getting out of here.” She said in a disgusted tone and leaned her head against the wall and stared up at the ceiling.
“No…I think we’ll get out.” Taylor said, standing up and walking over towards her.
“Oh, give it up. We’re not getting out. No one even knows we’re here.” Phyllis said, staring up at him.
“Your not very optimistic are you?” Taylor smiled.
“It’s not my strong suit I’d guess you’d say.” She said. Taylor sat down next to her and looked toward the window.
“Do you want to try the window again?”
“Don’t even bother. It’s really no use. We’re going to rot in here.” She said and looked down at her knees. She looked at him and noticed he still had that look of hope in his face. She wished desperately to feel that way but she couldn’t. He still smiled in spite of everything. Still laughed and joked. If only she could let her guard down. She felt bad for jumping on his back. He was just stating the truth. He noticed her looking at him and smiled.
“Well, we might as well go back to sleep. It might be our lucky day tomorrow. They might let us out, have to look rested.” He joked.
“All right.” She said and grinned at his silly joke. She leaned against him and nudged him with her arm.
“Hey, at least your not alone, right?” She smiled.
“Yeah. Would be pretty boring being in here by myself.” He smiled as he leaned his head against the wall and closed his eyes, letting out a deep sigh.
