Because The Night

Chapter 2

The next night I got up from my bed in the middle of the night. In actuality, I never was asleep. I rarely sleep during the night. It’s the only time that I can actually be fully awake and feel alive. I carefully made sure not to make any noise for fear I might wake up the rest of the people in the house. I tip toed to my closet and flicked on the overhead light, illuminating the dark cubby space. I grabbed my black leather pants and a black t-shirt and put them on the bed. I changed out of my sleep clothing and put on the stuff I had put on my bed. I grabbed my black combat boots and sat on the bed, lacing them up. I stopped suddenly when I could hear someone go in the bathroom across the hall and turn on the light. I crept to my door and looked through the crack to where the bathroom was. I could see Zac close the door just as I looked. I couldn’t let him know I was going out. He would automatically ask questions. I quickly grabbed the pillows off my bed and shoved them under the covers, creating the illusion of a sleeping body. I crept carefully to my window and opened it, making sure that it didn’t squeak. The wonderful night air hit me in the face and I closed my eyes, taking it in. The moon was big and full above my window and it took my breath away. I climbed up carefully, holding on to the window and leaped out, landing on the ground below. Although it looked high from where my bedroom window was, it was no problem to jump down from it. It became a ritual at times. I ran as fast as I could, cutting through the woods to get out of the vicinity of the house. I stopped after running for awhile and let myself take a breath. It was so beautiful out, with all the glowing eyes of the night creatures and the sounds of owls and crickets. The night was my only haven. I could feel my hunger begin to grow again. I had to feed soon. I hadn’t really had the chance to in the last day because of the heavy recording we had done. “Human” food simply wouldn’t suppress my hunger. I sniffed the air, smelling nothing but the woods.
“Damn!” I said angrily. I knew I had to go searching. I hated having to search. I made my way out of the woods and onto the street. I knew that the only way I could feed properly would be to go to somewhere that is full of people. Although my house was private, we didn’t live all that far away from a town. I knew the perfect place. I smiled to myself and licked my lips in anticipation. I walked down the road towards town and stopped near the side of the road. In L.A, there are a lot of people out in the middle of the night. I didn’t want to feed in such an open area with so many people around. I needed some place, more secluded.
I stood there and waited, hiding my face behind my blonde hair. I hailed a cab and got in, closing the door behind myself.
“Where to?” The cab driver asked.
“The ‘Blue Room’.” I answered and turned to look out the back window.
“The night club?” The guy questioned.
“Yeah.” I said.
“Why would you want to go there?” He asked, turning around in his seat and looking at me.
“Because I want to! Quit asking stupid questions and take me there!” I said angrily and crossed my arms over my chest. The driver shrugged his shoulders and pulled away from the curb. I leaned my head against the back of the seat and sighed.

We got to the “Blue Room” and I got out. I handed the guy the money roughly and slammed the door shut. He pulled away, squealing his tires as he left. I walked towards the entrance and could see a huge line of people waiting at the door.
“There is no way they’re going to let me in there.” I thought to myself. I looked around and noticed an alley along the other side of the night club. I casually walked to it, pretending nothing was going on. I made my way to the side entrance and put my hand on the doorknob. Suddenly, it opened up. I slipped in, unnoticed and made my way in. All around were what seemed to be hundreds of people. Hundreds of beautiful people. All dancing with each other in a dark room only lit by a couple of strobe lights. This would be so easy. No one would ever notice someone missing from such a crowded room. I made my way across the room full of people and sat down at a near by empty table. I glanced around at the moving bodies. I was so incredibly hungry. I wanted that sweet blood I craved. I stopped suddenly and glanced down at my feet as a body made it’s way over to the table. I looked under my hair and attempted to see the face through the flashing lights. Sitting across from me was a guy that didn’t look much older then myself. He had raven colored hair that he kept in a long braid down his back. He had startling gray eyes. He glanced over to me and I looked down again.
“Hello.” He said and smiled.
“Hi.” I said in a very quiet voice.
“This is getting so boring.” He said and looked away from me to the dancing crowd. I looked up again. My attention was turned towards him. I could see the white skin of his neck. I licked my lips again and could feel my intense want overtake. He turned back to me and I looked down again.
“You seem shy.” He laughed and leaned down, trying to look in my face.
“Sorry, I don’t know anyone here or anything. I was supposed to meet a friend.” I answered and looked up slowly.
“I’m looking for a friend too. Never gonna happen though.” He laughed. I smiled to myself.
“So…what’s your name?” He asked.
“Uh…Drake.” I stammered, trying to find a good cover up name.
“Drake…I’m Ian.” He smiled and took my hand in his, giving it a slight squeeze.
“Would you like a drink?” He asked.
“Uh…no…no thanks.” I said and smiled.
“Hey, do you want to get out of here?” He said, suddenly. I looked up in shock.
“Wha-what?” I asked nervously.
“Do you want to get out of here.” He smiled.
“Uh…sure.” I smiled. He got up and I followed. We left the nightclub and went out into the alleyway. I headed to the darkest area and leaned against the wall. He stood opposite me and looked at me.
“So Drake…” He began. I couldn’t hesitate any longer. I could feel my canines become larger in my mouth, just thinking of the warm, sweet blood…I walked over to him and put my hand on his shoulder.
“Ian, can I tell you something…” I smiled as I looked at him closely.
“Sure.” He smiled. I leaned in.
“My name’s not Drake!” I whispered and sank my teeth into his skin. He let out a groan as I drained him of his life energy. I finished and let his body drop to the ground. I licked my lips and wiped my mouth with my hand. I left the alleyway and headed on home.
