Because The Night

Chapter 11

I automatically knew that Phyllis was going back to the hotel. Most likely, Amanda would have been looking for her and went back there with Holly. I had to find a way to get to Amanda. To get her alone, when she’s most vulnerable.
I sped through the streets, ignoring all those yelling at me to slow down. I was on a mission. A mission for blood and I wouldn’t stop until I got it. I rounded the corner to the hotel. I could see Phyllis run in. I stopped, panting heavily. I could see Holly and Amanda, not shortly after, go in the entrance. I ran as fast as I could and grabbed her from behind. I covered her mouth with my hand and dragged her away. Holly was so totally oblivious. She just kept on talking and walked right in. Amanda didn’t even have time to scream. She struggled as I held onto her. She tried everything including trying to bite my hand. I finally dragged her down an alleyway and slammed her against one of the walls. Her eyes went wide with fright as I took my hand away from her mouth and held it to her throat, slightly squeezing. She tried desperately to pry m hands from her neck but the strength I had built up from my anger wouldn’t give way. I smiled at her as she helplessly tried to escape.
“This is your end!” I whispered close to her ear.
“NO!” she choked out. She thrashed her hands and attempted to hit me. I grabbed her by the hand and spun her around, slamming her in the wall again, pinning her arm behind her back.
“Say good night.” I said and with one swift move, I sank my teeth into her neck. The blood filled my mouth and rushed down my throat. She made a small whimpering sound. I smiled as I drank greedily. Suddenly, a bolt of energy went through me and I was thrown back. I couldn’t get up. It was like a force was pinning me down. She turned around and looked at me, putting her hand to her wound. She staggered and fell to the ground. I still couldn’t get up. This energy was still holding me. I looked up desperately to find the source of this incredible energy. I stopped when a body appeared before me. It was dark and all I could see were two glowing green eyes. My eyes went wide as I watched the form start to glow.
“PHYLLIS!” I yelled. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. She looked down at me sadly.
“Why, why would you do this?” She said, straining her voice.
“I…I…” I stuttered.
“I trusted you.” She said, letting the tears stream down her face.
“Phyllis…I…” I stammered. She turned her head fast and walked over towards her friend. She helped Amanda up and looked back down at me.
“This can’t go on.” She said, scrunching up her brow as her mouth trembled.
“I…”I still couldn’t let any words out.
“I will be back shortly.” She announced and then she moved on, taking Amanda with her.
I sat there, motionless. Why? Why would I ever do this? Why would I? I questioned myself, my motives. I was doing it for her or so I thought. I knew she would never trust me again. Why should she? She should just get rid of me. I wish she would so I wouldn’t have to live with the misery of what I had done.

“Taylor.” She said boldly. I turned my head fast and looked up at her.
“Phyllis.” I replied.
“Stand up.” She said angrily. She pursed her lips together and clenched her hands into fists. I did as she said and stood.
“Follow me.” She said, turning her back towards me. I desperately wanted to touch her and tell her I was sorry. I knew if I did…she wouldn’t accept. I followed behind, slowly. We walked for what seemed hours silently. She stopped in front of a cemetery. She walked past the gate and turned to look at me.
“Come on.” She said angrily. I nodded and followed in. We walked over to a clearing, past some gravestones. She turned and looked at me.
“Defend yourself.” She said. I had no idea what she meant by this.
“Why?” I asked.
“JUST DO IT!” She yelled, letting her voice crack.
“But…” Before I could get ready, I could feel a burst of energy hit me in the chest, causing me to fly backwards. It knocked the wind out of me but I soon regained myself.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” I screamed. She didn’t answer, she just let the tears come down her face. She wanted to fight. She wanted to kill me. I clenched my teeth and stood my ground.
“I don’t want to do this!” She yelled. I just looked at her. I knew that it was wither kill or be killed. I didn’t want to. I desperately wanted to say, “We can’t do this!” But that isn’t the way. I’ve had to do this before. I’ve had to kill some of my best friends just like in this situation. Before I could think, she shot another blast towards me. I dived to the ground avoiding it. I growled, feeling my hunger build. I got up and looked at her. Without another thought, I took off at full speed and knocked her down. She hit the ground hard and looked up at me in surprise. I was on top of her, pinning her down. I opened my mouth, exposing my teeth and started to lean in.
“NOOO!” She screamed and yet again, I was blasted back and hit hard into a near by tree. She quickly got up and took stance. I got up off the ground and took off again. I slammed into her so hard, she was thrown into gravestones. They crashed under the force and finally…nothing. I got up and looked down at her. She made no sound. Nothing.
“Phyllis…”I whispered. I put my hand on her face…nothing. No response.
“Phyllis!” I yelled desperately. She laid there. Just laid there with her eyes closed in a look of pain.
“PHYLLIS!” I screamed. Tears fell down my face as I tried to wake her. What did I do? How could I do it? I murdered her.
“NO!” I screamed and collapsed on top of her, embracing her lifeless body. I sobbed as I held her. I looked back down at her and through tear filled eyes, I could see blood trickling down the side of her mouth.

“Phyl!” A voice startled me. It was Holly. I looked back down at my angel one last time and kissed her. Pulling back, actually Holly pulled me back, I whirled around to face her. She looked, for a lack of a better word, pissed.
“What did you do to her!” She screamed, kneeling down next to Phyllis.
“Because you attacked Amanda! Oh Jesus…Phyl, hold on. I‘m taking you to the hospital…”
She went to pick Phyllis up and I felt pain fly through me. The force knocked me to the ground and I looked at Phyllis.
As Holly moved her, I felt pain flow through me again. Then it dawned on me, when I kissed her, I’d taken in her blood and my body was connected to hers. I fought the urge to vomit. The pain was pushing me into a black void.
“STOP!” I choked out, standing.
“YOU’LL KILL HER!”
“You’ve already made sure of that, haven’t you!”
“You don’t understand, she’s already dead, but she’s still alive inside!”
“You’re crazy!”
“YOU’RE KILLING HER!”
I lunged forward and pulled Phyllis’ body from Holly’s hold. She started to shudder and I knew I didn’t have much time.
Holly pulled at me and hit me, and it was hurting Phyllis more than it was hurting me. Turning my gaze to her. I felt my own power skyrocket. I moved so fast, she didn’t even see it coming. I knocked her away, my power ripping through the air, pushing her farther, and yet cushioning her body as it hit a large gravestone.
“I WON’T LOSE YOU! I CAN’T!” I shouted as thunder rolled through.
“Dear God, forgive me…” I bit my wrist, my blood flowing easily through the wound. I knew what she was. Besides being a witch, she was a vampire as well, but the witch dominated. Mortally, she was dying, but the vampire in her was attempting to sustain her. That’s what reached for me. She wanted to live, she wanted me to save her.
I bit the soft flesh of her neck, and let the blood flow into my mouth. I placed my wrist to her lips, letting my blood enter her system. She started to shudder and I pulled back. I watched as the wound closed, and her canines extended. Smiling, I looked down at her face.
