Guardian

Chapter 22

Phyllis burst into tears and buried her face in her hands. Slowly, the portal dissipated around her and she was back in the parking lot. Her wings were still surrounding her body as she cried.
“Excuse me…” A quiet voice startled her and she looked up. She met eyes with both Zac and Ike. Zac looked down at her sympathetically.
“You...you’re Taylor’s brother’s…aren’t you?” She said, wiping her eyes.
“Yes.” She said, lowering his gaze.
“I’m so sorry. I couldn’t…I couldn’t…I couldn’t save him…” She cried.
“It’s all right.” Ike said. Without another word between them, Zac crawled out of his chair and positioned himself on the ground. He embraced Phyllis and she burst into tears again.
“I’m…I’m so sorry.” She whimpered. Zac hugged her harder.
“You did your best.” Zac said in a comforting voice as he petted her hair.

Phyllis eventually made her way back to the apartment. She walked in and sat down on the sofa sadly. She looked up at the ceiling, attempting to control her sorrow. She got up ad walked into my room. She sat down on my bed and looked over at my pillow.
“I miss you so much…” She said out loud and let a tear fall down her face. She lay down on the bed and buried her face in the pillow, sobbing.
“Phyllis…Phyllis…” She locked up suddenly.
“T-Taylor…” She stammered wide-eyed. I smiled down at her.
“What are you doing on my bed…” Before I could finish, she jumped off the bed and launched herself into my arms.
“I smiled to myself and wrapped my arms around her waist.
“Oh god!” She cried. She looked up at me, smiling with tears rolling down her face.
“I thought I lost you…” She said. I put my hand on her face and wiped away her tears.
“You didn’t.” I smiled. She reached up and our lips met. I closed my eyes and sank into the kiss. We broke apart and I looked down at her.
“I love you so much.” She smiled and embraced me again.
“If only you knew how long I’ve wanted to hear you say that.” I said closing my eyes as I nuzzled her neck.
“I’m so happy…” I heard her say as she burst into tears again.
“Shh…shh…” I said, comforting her. Suddenly, without any warning, her wings bursted out of her back. She looked up at me and I smiled.
“So…you were the one that helped to bring me into the world. I had a memory once of when I was an infant, a young woman holding me. I remembered her having large white wings and the warmest touch…” I began to say.
“You know…Damien was right when he went to bring me back all those years ago.” She said, looking down at the floor.
“What…” I stammered.
“I did fall in love with a mortal. I fell in love with you when you were first born. I knew that we would always be together.” She smiled and looked up at me.
“And I thought I was supposed to be your guardian. I guess it’s the other way around.” I laughed.
“I guess.” She laughed back.
We sat down on the bed and just looked at each other.
“I just have one question…why didn’t you remember being an angel?” I asked.
“If an angel stays on earth too long, and fore sakes heaven, they lose their memories of it all together. That’s basically what happened to me.” She answered.
“Why did you fore sake heaven?” I questioned as I glided my hands through her hair.
“Would you believe me if I said it was because of you.” She smiled.
“You gave up heaven for me…” I stammered.
“I found my paradise when I found you. I didn’t need my wings any longer…they were of no use to me.” She smiled.
“All I needed was you…”
