Fate's Child

Chapter 16

Every day it seemed, Fate would develop by three months or so. I couldn’t believe it. By the time he was four days old, he was already saying his first word and crawling. I just couldn’t believe it. He not only developed much faster than other children, he also became as intelligent or more than a child that looked like him but grew normally. I stayed home with him while Taylor would go to work and school. He had to resume living as Jordan during that time period. I was going to wait until Fate began school before I would start to go back myself.

It was almost two months since I had had Fate. He already looked like he was thirteen years old. I tired my best to educate him at home but he wanted more. Every time I turned around, he was on the internet, looking up anything with any educational value. Each day, he looked more and more like Taylor. He refused to get his hair cut so he kept it long, all the way to his butt, normally braided. He was muscular for his size. He was already starting to grow taller than myself. He didn’t call me mom…it was strictly Phyllis. I was more like his older sister than his mother. He didn’t call Taylor, dad, either. It was a first name basis, which basically angered Taylor to no end. He didn’t have a son, he had a younger brother.

One afternoon, I was sitting on the couch, working on a drawing. Fate came in, book in one hand and a hamburger in the other.
“Phyllis?” He called. I looked up to meet his eyes.
“Fate…I’m your mother…” I began to say.
“Yeah…yeah…can I ask you something?” He said, rolling his eyes.
“Uh…yeah.” I said. I put my sketchbook down on the table in front of me and moved over on the couch to give him room. He sat down and looked at me straight in the face.
“What exactly am I?”
“Wha…what?” I stammered. I didn’t quite know what to say.
“I mean…I’m not like normal kids…I…” He began to stutter. I took a deep breath and took his hands in mine.
“Fate…you’re a blood drinker…”
“You mean a vampire?” He said wide-eyed.
“Well…yes.”
“Why is it that I develop so fast?”
“Well…uh…I couldn’t really tell you because I don’t know. It’s most likely the vampire within you.” I said and smiled slightly.
“All right…what exactly are you and Taylor…I mean dad?”
“Well…your father is a vampire and I’m both.”
“Both of what?” He questioned.
“I am a witch and a vampire.” I stated.
“You are?” He said, wide-eyed.
“Yes.”
“I have another question…”
“Go ahead.”
“Why can’t I go to school?” I was taken a little a back by this. I looked down at my hands nervously.
“Mom?”
“Fate…that’s a decision your father made.” I answered.
“I really want to go. I have never met anyone else other than you, dad, Holly and Amanda. I want to go to school.” He began to plead.
“Fate…your father made the decision to protect you…”
“I don’t want to be protected all my life! I want to experience people and other things! Can’t you talk to him…please.” He pleaded again. I began to bite my lip nervously. I looked into my son’s eyes and sighed.
“I’ll talk to him.”
“Thank you!” He smiled happily and hugged me.
“You know I would do anything for you.” I smiled.
“I know…I know.” He said as he let go of me.

A couple hours later, Taylor came home, seemingly very exhausted. He collapsed on the couch and began to close his eyes when I walked in.
“Hey Sweetie.” He said, opening his eyes and smiling. I stood over him smiling hesitantly. He put his hands around my waist and brought me down to sit on his lap. I leaned my back against his chest as he wrapped his arms around me. He rested his chin on my shoulder and started to close his eyes again.
“Tay?”
“Hm?” He said, not opening his eyes.
“I need to talk to you about something.”
“Shoot…”

“PHYLLIS! I mean…mom…!”
“Huh?” I looked up to see Fate walk into the room, braid swinging.
“What did Taylor say about me going to public school?” He stopped suddenly.
“WHAT!” Taylor yelled, getting up, causing me to crash to the floor. He glared at me, letting his eyes flare bright blue.
“Uh oh.” Fate clenched his teeth and raised his eyebrows.
“You are NOT going to public school!” Taylor said angrily. I scrambled to my feet and looked over at Fate.
“WHY!” Fate demanded, eyes flaring a blue green color.
“Because I said so!”
“That’s not a good enough reason!”
“Phyllis, would you please back me up on this!” Taylor said, turning his attention to me.
“I…uh…” I began to stammer.
“Mom was the one that was going to ask you!” Fate yelled.
“I…uh…uh…” I stammered. Both of them looked at me at the same time. No doubt about it, Fate was Taylor’s son. He had the same look on his fat that Taylor got.
“I…I can’t handle this!” I yelled and ran into my room, slamming the door shut behind myself. I could hear them begin to argue with each other loudly. After about an hour, it calmed down to a discussion. I lay down on my bed and waited patiently for the discussion to be over. Suddenly, one of them knocked on the door.
“Phyl?” Taylor’s voice came through as he opened the door a crack.
“Yeah?” I sighed.
“Can I come in?”
“It’s your room too.” I answered.
“We came to a decision…” He began to say as he sat down on the bed.
“Uh huh…”
“Starting next week, Fate is going to public school…with us.”
“So…what made you cave?” I asked.
“He presented some valid reasons and…well…you were going to ask me anyway.” He smiled.
“So…”
“What?” He asked.
“So he’s going to school with us next week.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
