Into The Light

Chapter 11

A couple of days later, Phyllis and I were walking down the hallway when she stopped suddenly and grabbed me by the arm.
“Manda, look.” She said, pointing to a flyer taped on the wall.
“What?” I asked. I looked and there I saw what I totally dreaded. A dance. There was no way in hell I wanted to go to a dance, thinking about my current situation. We were playing it pretty cool. I didn’t look at him, he didn’t look at me and that’s how I wanted it to stay.
“We’re going.” Phyllis announced.
“What’s this WE shit!” I said angrily. Phyllis looked at me and pursed her lips together.
“Man, you have to go. You only have about a week to go before you guys can ‘break up’.” Phyllis said.
“But Phyl…”
“No buts Man, you have to go to make it…”
“Believable…I know.” I said and sighed.

Finding out later, the dance was for that night. I definitely didn’t want to go knowing it was so soon. Phyllis insisted that we all meet at her apartment to get ready. She had been asked by dozens of guys but she turned them all down and said that she was going stag. I totally respected her for that choice also considering if she did, Taylor would have murdered the guy she had gone out with. She didn’t bother to tell him that she was even asked but I had a feeling he already knew.
I sat down on the couch in her apartment and looked all around. I crossed my arms over my chest and waited patiently for her to come out of the bedroom in which she was fishing around in her closet for something suitable for me to wear.
“COME ON!” I yelled angrily.
“I’m coming.” Phyllis called back. Her and Holly came out and Phyllis was holding a green miniskirt and a black v-neck shirt.
“NO WAY!” I said and got up, backing away towards the front door.
“Man, you have to…” Holly smiled.
“NO I DON’T!” I yelled.
“JUST PUT IT ON!” Phyllis yelled angrily.
“Uh uh. I’m outta he…”
“HOLLY!” Phyllis yelled. Before I could even reach the door, Holly grabbed me by the wrists and dragged me into the bedroom.
“NO!” I screamed.
“MANDA!” Phyllis yelled.
“Do we have to dress you ourselves?!” Holly laughed.
“Come on, I don’t want to…”
“YOU HAVE TO!” Phyllis said and gritted her teeth. I sighed and sat down on the bed.
“At least try it on.” Phyllis said and threw the clothes at me.
“Fine but no promises!” I said as I left to go in the bathroom.

“WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING!” I thought to myself. This was getting all to weird for me. I sighed to myself and began getting dressed.
The skirt was WAY to short for my comfort and the top was so low cut, I looked like a whore. I peeked my head out of the bathroom door and looked all around.
“Let’s see it.” I was startled when I could hear Taylor’s voice.
“Damn it!” I thought. I opened the door and stood there, attempting to pull down the skirt so it didn’t show so much.
“Man, it looks nice.” Holly smiled.
“SHUT UP!” I said angrily.
“I hate this!” I yelled.
“Well, sit down because we have to do your hair and makeup.” Phyllis announced and walked towards me.
“NO!” I yelled and ran back in the bathroom and locked the door behind me.
“MAN! COME OUT!” Phyllis yelled and pounded on the door with her fists.
“YOU DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT MAKEUP!” I yelled.
“JUST GET OUT!” Phyllis screamed.
“Oh…fine!” I said and unlocked the door. Phyllis opened the door as I sat down on the toilet seat.
“Taylor, why don’t you get ready while we finish her up.” Phyllis said as she turned around to look at him.
“All right.” He answered.
“Hol…” Phyllis called.
“On my way.” Holly smiled as she got up off the couch and came over to the bathroom. I rolled my eyes just thinking about how horrible this night was going to be. Phyllis grabbed a makeup case out of the drawer along with a hairbrush and hairspray.
“I’ll do it very lightly so it won’t be that noticeable.” She said as she grabbed an eyeliner pencil out of the case.
“Fine.” I sighed.

They finally finished on me…which took forever, and showed me a mirror. Phyllis did a good job on the makeup and the hair but the idea of having to wear the clothes made me cringe. We finally got out of the bathroom and Taylor came out. He had on a pair of black pants and a skintight black shirt.
“Manda…you look nice.” He smiled.
“SHUT UP!” I said and almost spat when I talked.
“SORRY!” He yelled and narrowed his eyes at me.
“We’ll meet you guys later…we have to get ready too.” Holly said as she headed into the bathroom.
“HUH?” I said, bewildered.
“We’ll meet you.” Phyllis said.
“NO! NO! We’re all riding together!” I said in a panic.
“No we’re not…you guys are riding together and Holly and I are riding together…to make it more…”
“FUCKING BELIEVABLE! I’M SO TIRED OF THIS!” I yelled throwing my hands in the air.
“Just go…would you.” Phyllis said and walked over to me.
“I hate my life.” I sighed.
“I hate your life too.” Taylor laughed.
“I’LL…”
“Manda.” Phyllis said, glaring at me.
“I’ll be in the car!” I said as I walked to the door in a huff. Phyllis looked at Taylor and kissed him on the lips lightly.
“Phyl, this isn’t going to work…” He began to protest.
“Yes it will if you guys just listen to what I tell you to do.” Phyllis answered and looked into his eyes.
“I expect at least one dance from you tonight.” He smiled.
“Taylor you know I can’t…” He gave her a look of pleading and I knew she was going to cave.
“Fine. One dance. I’ll see you there.” She sighed and reached up and kissed him again on the lips.

I walked outside and towards the car. Taylor was soon out and was following me. I immediately got in the driver’s seat and took out my keys.
“What do you think you’re doing?” He asked as he made his way over to the car.
“I’m driving, what does it look like I’m doing?” I said angrily.
“I think maybe I should drive…”
“Not my car you aren’t!” I yelled.
“But I think it would make it more…”
“SHUT UP ABOUT BEING BELIEVABLE! Get in!” I yelled. He shut his mouth and did as I said and got in.
“Your car is a pigsty…”
“Shut up!” I yelled and put the car in drive.

We arrived at the dance and I sat in my car, looking out at nothing.
“Manda…”
“What!”
“What are we waiting for?” He asked.
“The girls.” I answered.
“Okay.” He said. He leaned his head against the seat and looked up at the ceiling and sighed.
“What’s your problem?” I said, gritting my teeth.
“I don’t want to be in this situation.” He answered and looked at me.
“Neither do I…”
“You were the one that got us into this!” He yelled.
“ME!”
“YES YOU!” He yelled.
“Just get out of the car!” I said angrily. Just as he was about to open the door, Phyllis and Holly pulled up next to us.
“What the hell is going on?” Phyllis asked as she looked over the driver’s side at us.
“YOUR BOYFRIEND IS BEING AN ASS!” I yelled.
“MANDA!” Phyllis yelled angrily.
“Would you guys just hold off on the bickering until we get out of here!” Holly said angrily.
“Whatever!” I said and opened the door.
