Put Up Your Kingdom For Sale

Chapter 12 - "Don't Say You Love Me...."

The alarm went off and Zac looked all around. He looked at the clock and he fell back in the bed. He looked down and searched the bed for Eve.
“Well, might as well get up.” He said, yawning. He searched the floor for his boxers and finally found them in a pile in the corner to the room. He pulled them on and headed to the door. He walked to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. He started thinking about the night before. He thought about how enraged Taylor had gotten. He didn’t blame him. He didn’t expect it. He didn’t even know, none of them knew. He hated having to keep secrets from his family especially his brothers but he had no choice. Claire had been like a member of the family and if they had known the truth, he knew that they would never forgive him again. When he really thought about it, Claire really didn’t deserve it. She just stopped calling, stopped showing up. It was just too convenient to forget about her.

He leaned over the sink and filled it with cold water and splashed his face. He felt his chin with his hand and noticed he needed a shave but didn’t even bother to. It truly was pointless. He wiped his face with the towel and headed downstairs when he could smell a wonderful aroma coming from the kitchen.
“EVE?” He called.
“Yes?” She called, coming around the corner. She had on a sheer black teddy and had her hair pulled half back. She smiled at him with that look on her face and he leaned in and kissed her.
“I’m making waffles.” She smiled.
“With ice cream?” He smiled back.
“Are there any other kind.” She laughed. He followed her in the kitchen and sat down in the seat. She put the waffles on a plate and put them in front of him. She walked back over to the counter to get the ice cream and stopped.
“Oh Zac.” She smiled, aiming a spoonful of ice cream in his direction.
“NO!” He laughed, as he got up and tried to move away from her.
“Come on.” She laughed.
“Uh uh.” He said, putting his hands up defensively. She let it fly and it hit him on the side of the face.
“AGHHH!” He said, raising his hand to wipe it away.
“No, don’t.” She smiled. She moved in close to him, putting her arms around his neck. She slid her tongue against his cheek and licked it off. She leaned in and pressed her lips against his. Zac put his arms around her waist and picked her up and sat down in the chair, pulling her into his lap. Eve stopped suddenly and looked into his face.
“Zac?”
“What?” He smiled.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” She asked, changing her expression.
“Tell you?” He questioned.
“About your girlfriend.” She said, getting up off his lap and heading to the other side of the kitchen.
“I didn’t think it was important. She’s not important anymore. I love you and…” He began to explain.
“Don’t say that!” She said, stopping him abruptly.
“What?” He said, shocked.
“Don’t say you love me. You don’t know me.” Eve answered.
“But…But.”
“Listen Zac, I haven’t had the best relationships with men. That and you really don’t know me. Don’t start loving me if you don’t know me.” She said, pushing a stray lock out of her face. Zac got up and moved towards her.
“I do know you!” He said, as he attempted to touch her.
“No! You don’t! Zac, if you know me so well, then…what do I do for a living, how old am I, name some of my relatives.” Eve said boldly.
“I…I…I can’t.” He said, lowering his head.
“But…Eve, I know how I feel about you…” He began when the phone rang.
“It’s coming from my cell phone in your front room.” Zac said.
“I’ll get it.” Eve said, leaving the room. Zac stood there, not knowing what to do.
“Zac, it’s your brother.” Eve called. Zac ran to the front room, taking the phone from Eve. Eve just looked at him as she handed it to him.
“Hello?”
“Zac, Where are you?” Ike’s voice broke through.
“I’m at Eve’s. Why? What’s going on?” Zac said, automatically thinking of Taylor.
“Well…uh...how can I put this…”
“Damn it Ike, spit it out!” Zac said angrily.
“Taylor got drunk. He’s spewing his brains out as we speak.”
“I’m leaving now.” Zac said, getting ready to hang up the phone.
“ZAC! NO! I don’t think it’s a very good idea. I wouldn’t come over if I were you.” Ike said frantically.
“Ike, your not me!” Zac said, hanging up the phone. He ran back into the other room to see Eve standing there.
“I have to go.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” Eve asked.
“No, I don’t think you should.”
“All right.” Eve said. She walked over to him and kissed him on the cheek. Zac smiled and embraced her.
“I’ll be back.”
“I know.” She smiled.

Zac pulled in the driveway and turned off the engine. He jumped out of the car and ran to the door. Ike opened the door and Zac pushed his way in.
“Zac, you really shouldn’t have come.” Ike began.
“Where is he?” Zac asked, turning around.
“ZAC!”
“DAMN IT IKE, WHERE IS HE?” Zac demanded.
“Up stairs.” Ike said. Amanda, Holly and Candy just looked at him. He nodded at the girls and made his way to the upstairs rooms.
Phyllis came out of the bathroom and threw a wash cloth in a hamper. Zac came in and saw her. Phyllis looked up.
“What…What are you…” Phyllis began. Zac didn’t even acknowledge her. He pushed open the bathroom door. Taylor was bent over the toilet and didn’t look up.
“Leave me alone Ike!” Taylor yelled then looked up. His look was one of shock then hardened to anger.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!” Taylor yelled angrily.
“Taylor…I…” Zac stammered.
“GET OUT!” Taylor yelled.
“Taylor…”
“GET OUT!” Taylor yelled again, throwing something at the door. Zac closed the door and turned around.
“Zac.” Phyllis said looking at him. Zac just turned and ran down the stairs, walking out of the house.
