Chapter 15

I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night. I turned over in the bed and could see she was still asleep. I yawned and rubbed my eyes. I sat up in bed and looked all around. I got out of the bed quietly and walked silently to the door. Just as I opened the door, a white light began to penetrate the room. Before I could do anything, my wings ripped through, causing me to rock back uneasily. I blinked hard and stepped back. I watched as a familiar form stepped through. The light faded slightly and I could see it was my host from before.
“Hello Taylor.” She smiled and walked forward.
“Uh…hi.” I stammered.
“Well…I see she has found out about your…well…lifestyle.” She smiled again and pointed to my wings.
“Uh…yeah.” I said and smiled.
“How are you feeling?”
“Fine…why…why do you ask?” I said, looking at her funny.
“Well, I can see the damage to your wings. I should have warned you about that I’m afraid.”
“I thought you said that I had immortality?” I said suspiciously.
“Well…you do but there’s a catch…”
“Of course.” I said, rolling my eyes.
“The catch is every time something happens to you where you should have died, you will heal but you will notice the tips of your wings will turn red. Slowly, every time you are wounded, the redness will grow until you lose all your feathers and you will die.” She said sadly.
“That’s not immortality, this is a slow death sentence!” I said angrily.
“Taylor, I don’t make the rules. You are doing a very good job of protecting Phyllis. You will be rewarded…”
“Forget it! You know, I didn’t even want to do this. I want to go home and see my family…”
“Taylor?” I turned fast so see Phyllis sitting up in bed, staring at me curiously.
“Ph…Phyllis?” I stammered.
“Who are you talking to?’ she asked, rubbing her eyes. I turned again and saw she was gone, along with the light.
“Oh…Uh…I…” I stuttered.
“Come on, go back to sleep, you’re starting to freak me out.” She said.
“All…all right.”

The next morning I woke up groggily to see Phyllis sitting up in bed, looking down at me was a concerned look across her face.
“What’s wrong?” I asked as I stretched and yawned.
“I’m worried.” She said and looked up at the ceiling.
“About what?” I asked, sitting up to look at her.
“Well…about you.” She answered.
“Huh….wh…why me? I mean…”
“Taylor…you were talking to no one last night. Plus…you know…with what happened before hand…” She said, brushing her fingers through her hair.
“Nothing to worry about. I’m fine.” I smiled uneasily.
“Are you sure?” She asked, narrowing her eyes at me.
“Yes.” I said, trying to put her at ease.
“Well…let’s get ready and we can go and get you a new mattress.” She said, getting out of the bed.

We got ready and headed out to the car. Phyllis stopped suddenly and I almost slammed into her.
“What?” I asked and put my hand on her back.
“Manda and Holly are here.” She sighed. I looked over her head and could see the girls getting out of Amanda’s car.
“What are you two doing here?” Phyllis asked, putting her hands on her hips.
“We thought we would visit since you have the day off.” Amanda smiled.
“Well, we’re going out to get Taylor a new mattress so…”
“We’ll go with you.” Holly answered.
“But…” Phyllis began to stammer.
“Oh come on Phyl, it’ll be fun.” Amanda said, taking a few steps forward. Phyllis turned around and looked at me.
“Is that all right?” She sighed.
“Fine.” I smiled.

We all got in Phyllis’ car and headed to the mattress place. Phyllis attempted to ignore Amanda and Holly but they bugged her the whole way.
“Would you two shut the hell up!” She yelled and glanced over to me in the passenger’s seat. I just chuckled to myself.
We got to the store and we all walked in. They not only had mattresses, they also had full bedroom displays. Phyllis immediately began walking toward the twin mattress displays. I glanced over at Holly and Amanda and noticed them exchanging looks.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking Man?” Holly smiled wickedly.
“Time to test the beds. Taylor, would you like to join us?” Amanda grinned.
“Sure.” I smiled. We ran to the nearest display, which happened to be a king sized canopy bed. They were jumping up and down on it like a couple of little kids. I opted to just lay down on it.
“What the hell are you three doing!” Phyllis yelled angrily as she stormed over to the bed.
“Testing it out.” Holly laughed as she landed on the bed, causing me to fly up in the air about two feet.
“You’re like children. We’re here for one thing and then we’re leaving.” She said, scrunching up her brow. With that look, she reminded me of my mother. She turned fast.
“I’m going to look at the twins.” She said and walked away. I looked up at Amanda and Holly and shrugged my shoulders.
“You know, I think there’s a water bed in the next aisle.” Amanda grinned.
“Race you two to it.” Holly said, glancing at Amanda and I.
“You’re on!” I yelled and ran full speed towards the display.

I won and jumped on the bed, doing a belly flop. The bed was so comfortable, I thought sure I was going to fall asleep on it. That was short lived when the two of them dove onto it, causing me to almost roll off of it. We were laughing hysterically. I looked over and saw Phyllis come around the corner. I couldn’t help but grin.
“Are you three almost finished making fools of yourselves? Taylor, you have to pick out a mattress.” She said, looking at me sternly.
“Y-Yes.” I said between laughter. She turned again. I glanced over to her friends and winked. I took one step off the bed and glanced back at them. Amanda nodded.

“AGHH!” Phyllis screamed as I grabbed her around the waist and threw her onto the bed on top of me.
“WHAT THE HELL!” She yelled. I started laughing as she crawled off me and attempted to get off the bed. Every time she moved, the bed would make a wave causing her to fly backwards.
“GOD DAMN IT!” She huffed. Amanda, Holly and I just laughed.
“Get off the damn bed!” She said, straightening out her clothes. We did and followed after her, laughing quietly.
“Wasn’t that fun Phyl?” I asked, putting my hand on her lower back.
“Just pick one out.” She said and pursed her lips together.

We finally picked out a mattress and we were just about to leave when I looked at the water bed again. I stopped and looked.
“Taylor…no.” Phyllis said, stepping in front of me.
“Why not?” I said and smirked.
“You’ll never leave the apartment.” She laughed.
“Oh come on. It’ll be great.” I smiled.
“Yeah Phyl…we can come over and crash on Taylor’s bed during the weekends.” Amanda smiled.
“Oh great.” Phyllis sighed and rolled her eyes. I smiled and looked at her.
“Do whatever you want.” She sighed again.
“Thanks Phyl.” I smiled and kissed her on the cheek.
“AND STOP DOING THAT!” She yelled and hit me on the arm. I chuckled and we walked towards the salesman.
